Are Chinese universities of lower quality?

Are Chinese universities of lower quality? Currently there are more than 200,000 Chinese students in the US. Are Chinese universities perceived to be lower quality than Western ones? Do overseas graduates have an advantage in the Chinese job market?

Hi! I have studied abroad both in the US (at University of California Berkeley) and in China (at University of Nottingham Ningbo China) and, based on my experience, I would not say that Chinese universities are necessarily of a lower quality. I definitely think that Berkeley was a great university (although, as always, not perfect), but I felt that UNNC was very good as well. I think there is a couple of things that should be remarked on this topic:

American higher education sector has historically been super prestigious, well-funded and very international. Much of the top-quality research is conducted in the US and many of the best professors on the globe may be teaching in America. However, there are many dark sides on this. On the one hand, access to higher education in the US is tremendously unequal: year by year many low-income and minority students are unfairly deprived of the opportunity to go to university in direct ways (e.g. unaffordable tuition fees) or in an indirect manner (for example, underfunded public schools in black communities that trigger bad results in SAT). On the other hand, the US concentrates many of the top universities of the world, but most of its universities are far from that level. There is a myriad of universities in the US that are of a very bad quality and that do not receive the media and social scrutiny that they should receive.

Chinese universities are improving a lot and are becoming more and more prestigious. Some of its top universities are already competitive at an international level - and this is progressively flipping this traditional trend of more overseas students than foreign students in China that you mentioned. In particular, I can say that University of Nottingham Ningbo, where I studied, was academically good: most of its professors were excellent at teaching and I feel that they really promoted research abilities and critical thinking. It is true that UNNC may be an exception in China because of it being part of the England-based University of Nottingham, but my point is that I would not necessarily believe Chinese universities are of a lower quality.

There are about 2600 universities and colleges of higher learning in China. The student population is roughly 30M.

Getting into any of the top universities in China is very tough as your gaokao (national exams) results have to be very high, and even that does not guarantee you a place.

Chinese students from fairly wealthy families prefer to pursue tertiary education overseas, with their favorite choices being USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand & Canada.

China has very good universities like Peking University, Tsinghua University, University of Science & Technology of China, Zhejiang University, etc. These are amongst the best in the world.

Chinese students contribute billions of dollars each year to their host countries, and most of these students are well-behaved and dedicated to their studies.

I think Chinese universities are very good. Let's not forget that the vast improvement of Chinese technology over the last 40 years is brought about by the STEM graduates produced by local universities. The Gaokao is definitely very competitive, and local universities have limited places. Those who couldn't get into local universities will have to go overseas to study, just like what happens in Singapore or Malaysia. Of course, there will be some rich families who choose to send their kids overseas.
