(Details hereThe France army conducted the first firing of the new M51 strategic missile on Thursday, November 9, 2006, the Ministry of Defense announced. Defense Minister Michèle Alliot-Marie welcomed the smooth running of the operations, recalling "the need to conduct these tests to validate the performance of the future missiles of the Strategic Oceanic Force, and thus take an important step in the adaptation and modernization of our deterrence."

This "experimental flight" was "carried out, as always, without a weapon" [nuclear charge] and was "conducted in accordance with all of France's international commitments in terms of security, transparency and non-proliferation," the Ministry said in a statement.

Constituting the fourth generation of long-range nuclear missiles, the M51 missile, which will be put into service by 2010, is to equip the new-generation nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines of the French Strategic Oceanic Force (FOST).  Succeeding the M45, the M51 is built like it by the EADS group.

With a height of 12 meters and a maximum weight of 56 tons, it will have a significantly increased range (between 8,000 and 10,000 km) and improved precision compared to the M45, according to the Ministry of Defense.

The Sortir du nucléaire network denounced Thursday's launch, which "provides perfect pretexts to countries that want to acquire nuclear weapons."
