Since early childhood, Joël BARDEAU paints and is interested in photography. After a career in the field of surgery, his creative side got the better of him to let him flourish in the world of photogrəphy. Today, all his energy is devoted to it,the eye riveted on the lens to capture movements, colors and shadows, until developing an original photographic style

Prof.Eric BEY.Head ofthe Department of Plastic Surgery at Percy Military Hospital in Clamart France, has had the opportunity o discover and appreciate Joel BARDEAU's photographic work. Involved in humanitarian actions, the surgeon has proposed to the photographer to accompany him during a surgical mission of the International Children Action Foundation in Vietnam,a mission conducted toward children with serious sequelae of burns.

With the agreement of the Foundation Children Action l have followed their mission in Thanh-Hóa in June 2015.

Total immersion in a children's hospital for 10 days, from morning to evening: management and follow-UP of more than 140 children accompanied by their family, consultations, medical committees surgical procedures, postoperative follow-UP of children, training of local staff

Through this photographic work, lwanted to present all the empathy of these medical teams, their dedication, involvement, willingness o transmit their know-how to local teams, without any arrogance their desire to provide the relief that these children and their amilies so desperately needed. Therefore l decided to work in total immersion, only in black and white,Using my Leica Monochrom camera. My intention was to be the least intrusIve possible,to avoid melodramatic or too hard clichés, to become a simple human witness or these intense and Deautiful, although sometimes very oppressive, moments of a profound humanity When those who knoW and can offer their know-how, do it with no other hope than the well-being of those who receive.

From his earliest childhood, Joël Bardeau has been interested in both painting and photography. Following a career in the field of surgery, his inner artist took the lead, allowing him to flourish in the world of photography. Today, he devotes all his energy to this craft—his eye fixed on the lens to capture movement, color, and shadow—ultimately developing a unique photographic style.

Professor Eric Bey, Head of the Plastic Surgery Department at the Percy Military Teaching Hospital in Clamart, France, had the opportunity to discover and appreciate Joël Bardeau’s photographic work. Deeply involved in humanitarian efforts, the surgeon invited the photographer to join a surgical mission in Vietnam, organized by the international foundation Children Action, to provide care for children suffering from the severe, lasting effects of burns.

With the approval of the Children Action foundation, I accompanied their mission to Thanh Hóa in June 2015.

It was a total immersion in a children’s hospital for 10 days, from morning until night: the care and follow-up of over 140 children and their families, including consultations, medical board meetings, surgical procedures, post-operative care, and the training of local staff.

Through this photographic project, I sought to showcase the profound empathy of these medical teams—their dedication, their commitment, and their desire to pass on their expertise to local staff, entirely free of arrogance—as well as their heartfelt wish to bring relief to the children and families who needed it so desperately. I therefore decided to undertake a project based on total immersion, working exclusively in black and white with my Leica Monochrom. My goal was to be as unobtrusive as possible—to avoid clichés that were overly sentimental or harsh—and instead serve as a simple, human witness to these intense and magnificent moments. Though at times deeply oppressive, these instances reveal a profound humanity: moments where those who possess the necessary expertise offer their skills, seeking nothing in return but the well-being of those who receive their care.

I have created this monograph with the intention of donating the royalties to the Children Action Foundation.
