Today's devotional takes us to the book of Matthew 26:41 which says, "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak."
Let's meditate on this passage for a while and then we will pray together.
These words are from Jesus Christ who spoke these words during His earthly ministry.
The Bible tells us that at that time he was saying these words to Peter.
But today I believe he is saying these words to all of us, to every single one of us.
I believe the Bible is very specific with its use of words.
I believe Jesus Christ is very specific when he says things to his disciples. They are not mere spiritual advice given to fill space. They are deliberate.
It means that in this place the disciples were in real danger of falling into temptation just as we are today.
In fact, we are much more in danger of that in this present day because the temptations in the world have evolved.
They have taken on new faces.
They are much more cunning, much more seductive than they have ever been. And it is no longer news that living the Christian life requires intentionality.
It has always required intentionality. But today it requires even more of that.
The second sentence in Matthew 26:41 also unintentionally shows us our limitations as human beings.
I would say it's a warning. It tells us very plainly our state. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. It says meaning that as people many times we are willing to overcome these temptations. In fact, we are tired of having them in our lives and we want to walk away. But many times we find ourselves going back to them. The Bible tells us that the flesh will always and almost never be in agreement with the spirit and the same is true here.
The charge today is that we protect our minds from temptations and worldly desires.
Don't miss the note of personal intention there. No one else can do this guarding for you. It is something that you choose and something that you do yourself. Because if we are being very factual and honest with ourselves, we know that if Jesus Christ is what we want, if Jesus Christ is what we want to look like, it needs to be done.
The Bible says something very striking in relation to this in the book of Proverbs 4:23. The NIV version renders it this way.
Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Above all else, above everything else, guard your heart.
I also particularly love how the KJV version of the Bible renders it. It says. "Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life."
It lays just enough emphasis for us to understand the weight of the statement with all diligence. It says, for out of it are the issues of life.
The issues of life, everything we do, flow from our heart and our mind.
We are largely a construct, a product of our thoughts. They shape our actions.
The Bible says in Proverbs 23:7 that as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. And now imagine that organ 🫀 we do life out of, the place where our decisions come out of is corrupted.
Just imagine what such a man will be, or what his life will look like, or what we will produce when it is corruption that dwells within us.
And today protecting your heart and mind does not work with just saying it. It is not just in the saying. It requires action.
The Bible pretty much gives us a directive on what to do in this world that seeks to claim our minds. And that directive is found in the first verse we looked at today.
Matthew 26 verse 41 which says watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.
In fact, this directive is found in the first two words of the verse and they are watch and pray.
These are the words the Bible gives us as keys to protecting our minds from temptations and worldly desires.
It tells us to be watchful and to be prayerful.
Now let's look at them in the particular order in which they were given.
The Bible tells us first to watch, to be watchful. And I believe it means this in every sense of the word. To be watchful of what comes around us, of who comes around us, of what we watch, what we see, what we permit in our space, and what we subject our minds to.
Now, sometimes it may be impossible to be 100% at this, but we still have to be alert in the places where we do have control.
If you know you are weak in a certain area, you have to be careful of what people bring to you, what they bring around you, particularly when you know that those things tempt you.
You have to be particular about what you allow in your space. And by extension, you have to be watchful of the friendships you keep.
Do your friends lead you back to your temptations?
Do they lead you back to those worldly desires?
Or do they lead you away from them and lead you to God?
Our friends should be a covering. They should help us to stand rather than cause us to fall.
I believe a major part of being watchful is also to be mindful of what we fill our hearts and our minds with.
What do you watch?
What keeps you busy?
What are the types of entertainment you let into your heart?
We don't really give enough power to how much what we watch and we get into our hearts, particularly in the way of entertainment fuels our temptations and addictions.
In fact, the book of 1 Thessalonians 5 22 tells us to reject every kind of
7:53 evil. And these evil things come through what we watch as well. 7:59 And having watched, the Bible says we should pray.
The one thing that is always a guaranteed help for us as Christians is praying.
Praying is calling God into the scene, calling God into our weaknesses.
We have our responsibility, but there are simply those things we can't do ourselves.
And one of those things is strengthening ourselves spiritually. Because in this case, even the Bible tells us that even if our spirit is willing, the flesh is weak. And his prescription was prayer.
So having observed our watching, we must not neglect to pray because this is where we draw strength to be stronger than those temptations and those desires in our hearts that are not of God.
If you feel like you are on that path of protecting your mind today from temptations and worldly desires, then there is no better time to pray like the present.
l'd like to invite you to join me as we speak these prayers right now.
Father, in the name of Lord Jesus Christ, I thank you for today.
I thank you for the gift of this morning.
I thank you for your mercy that has allowed me to see another day. And I thank you for these words that have come at the right time for me.
Thank you, Father, because you know exactly what I need and when I need it. Thank you because you understand the season of my life better than I do.
And you know the battles that are before me, the ones around me, and even the ones within me.
Thank you for speaking to me in a way that meets me where I am. Thank you, Father.
Father, you know my heart and you have seen all that is in it. You have seen the places where I am strong and you have seen the places where I am weak.
You have seen the struggles I do not always speak about. You have seen the thoughts I wrestle with, the desires I do not always know how to overcome, and the things that try to pull me away from you.
So this morning, Lord, I stand before you as someone who still needs your help.
As someone who still feels the pressure of temptation and lusts that do not glorify you.
Father, I ask that you strengthen me against temptation. Strengthen me against worldly desires.
Strengthen me against the things that fight for my attention and try to take the place that belongs to you alone.
Lord, particularly l ask that you strengthen me against the things I have already allowed into my heart, the things I have entertained, the things I have made room for and the things I have become too familiar with.
You know the habits I have struggled to break.
You know the desires that have lingered too long.
You know the things I have returned to even when I knew they were not good for me.
Father, please give me the grace and strength to say no when I face these situations.
When temptation comes, help me stand firm. When I feel weak, give me strength.
When my heart wants to turn the wrong way, support me.
Teach me to choose what is right, even when it's hard. Help me walk away even when I'm drawn to what harms me.
Teach me to love holiness more than the things that have been pulling at my soul.
Father, I am asking for your forgiveness for all the ways I have fallen short.
Lord, I admit that there have been times when I gave in to desires that I knew were not pleasing to you.
There have been moments when I was not watchful, when I did not guard my heart as I should have.
I confess that I have not always paid attention to what I allowed into my spirit.
There were times I kept company I should not have kept.
Times I listened to things that did not help my walk with you.
Times I drew closer to the very things that made my struggle harder. Lord, I ask that you forgive me.
Wash me clean, Lord. Cleanse me from everything I have allowed in, from everything I have agreed with, from everything I have become comfortable with. Let your mercy speak for me today.
Let your grace restore me and make me whole again.
Lord, from this moment on, I ask that you give me the grace to be watchful.
Help me not to live carelessly.
Help me not to be passive about my spiritual life.
Help me to be mindful of the company I keep, the conversations I allow, the places I go, and the things I set my eyes on.
Help me to pay attention to what I feed my mind with every single day.
Father, show me what is helping me grow and what is pulling me away from you.
Teach me to stop making excuses for anything that is drawing me away from your Presence.
Help me to choose a life that is free from temptation above all the other things that try to take my focus.
Lord, help me to value purity, to value peace, and to desire a heart that is clean before you.
Father, today I am asking for your help in the places where I am weak, especially when it comes to being watchful.
There are things in my life that I struggle to let go of and I bring them to you now.
There are friendships that I know are hurting me.
But I find it hard to release them. So I surrender them to you.
The shows I watch, the habits I hold on to, the conversations I engage in, and the activities that pull me away from your light. I lay them all at your feet today.
Lord, help me and help all of us to turn away from anything that draws us closer to darkness.
Give us courage where we have been weak, give us conviction where we have been careless, give us divine wisdom where we have been confused, and give us strength to walk away from anything that is working against the life you have called us to live.
Lord Jesus Christ, as I learn to be watchful, help me to be just as intentional and consistent in prayer.
Help me not to wait until l am overwhelmed before l come to you. Help me not to take prayer for granted.
Teach me to pray faithfully, to pray sincerely, and to pray even when I do not feel like it.
I know that in prayer you give me strength.
In prayer you give me clarity.
In prayer you give me the help I cannot give myself.
Let prayer become a place of power for me. A place where I am strengthened to stand against the desires of the world and the temptations that come my way.
Lord, I ask that you help me keep my heart and mind clean before you so that everything that fills my thoughts and my spirit will bring glory to your name.
As I continue to watch and to pray, help me to grow deeper in you.
I do not want to remain where I am spiritually.
I want to be rooted in you, grounded in your truth, and steady in my walk with you.
Help me Lord to keep moving forward to mature in faith of God and to stand firm in your Word.
Heavenly Father, I thank you today because you have heard my prayer.
I thank you because as I choose to remain watchful and continue in prayer, you make it easier for me to turn away from the temptations that once held me back.
You make it easier to choose what is right, to walk away from relationships that do not help me grow in Christ and to draw closer to those believers who encourage me in you.
You help me to guard my heart and keep my mind fixed on you. Thank you Lord. Thank you Jesus.
Your Name alone deserves all the praise. Amen.
Respected readers, if you have pray and believe these prayers this morning, let God bless you all. I pray that all the blessings in this prayer will be upon you in the name of Jesus Christ. So be it.
