Altruism and selfishness are both characteristics of mechanisms of self-protection.
Selfish traits compel us human to self-indulge at the expense of other. When a society is made mostly, 51%, of such people, a vicious circle of chaos and disease will develop. And this circle can only be broken by you alone, when you choose and will not to continue on the selfish traits in your dealing with others, daily.
Altruism, on the other hand, is the quality and virtue product of unselfishness, prompting endeavours that benefit society and humankind, the survival and progress of which also serve the altruist.
