MYTH #4:
YOU HAVE TO BE LUCKY.
Lotteries are for suckers. They’re a cunning way for state politicians
to siphon money right out of the pockets of their constituents—without
adding new taxes.
When you play the lottery, it’s like giving free money to yourstate
government. (Heck, you would be better off just mailing a check to your state representative; at the least you might get a thank-you letter.)
Most people know it’s a long shot to win the lottery, but they don’t
have any idea how long of as hot it really is. According to Saving Advice.com, single state lotteries usually have odds of about 18 million to one, and multiple state lotteries have odds as high as 120 million to one.
Therefore...
•You are 6-45 times more likely to die froma lightning strike
than you would be to win the lottery.
•You are 18-120 times more likely to die from flesh-eating
bacteria than to win the lottery.
•You are 180-1,200 times more likely to die from snake bite or
bee sting than win the lottery.
•You are 30,000-200,000% more likely to die in a legal
execution than to win the lottery.
•According to Space.com, you are 450,000 to 3 million times
more likely to die in an asteroid collision in the year 2029 than
to win the lottery.
•If you drive10 miles to purchase your lottery ticket, it’s 3-20
times more likely for you to be killed in a car accident along the
way than to win the jackpot.
Needless to say, I’ve never bought a lottery ticket in my life! I don’t
believe in getting rich through luck.
